ARTIST' STATEMENT
Dara Handy uses a range of glazes and vibrant colors to create oil paintings that are lush and luminous. Dara makes two distinct categories of artwork, figurative and landscape.
In her figurative work, Dara brings religious based themes into the modern day world of the family and home. She also couples an iconography style and motifs to her pieces adding complexity and interest within a modern atmosphere. Within her religious pieces, Dara has created a rosary series relating modern mothers and infants to the Madonna and infant Jesus. Dara’s lavish arrangement of harmonic elements capture the depth of love a mother has for child.
Accompanying Dara’s religious scenes are landscapes portraying a balance of truth and goodness in art versus a subjective beauty. She sees a link between her figurative work and the nature pieces with attention to health, purpose and beauty. The landscape pieces Dara has created are varied in content but rich in hue and texture. Her most treasured pieces are floral, finding the imperfections in nature to be impeccably beautiful having the ability to show the frailty of the foliage with ease.
The application of her medium makes the images glisten, as she uses watercolor-like glazes washing over the canvas, creating variance of depth and interest. These layers dry to expose a complex display of pigments.
